Carl-Zuckmayer-Arbeitsstipendium

English version below

In 2023, the Ministry for Family Affairs, Women, Culture and Integration (since May 2026: Ministry of Municipality, Construction, Habitation and Culture) of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate announced the CARL ZUCKMAYER SCHOLARSHIP for the first time – a scholarship which focuses on promoting contemporary European drama and the memory of the political German playwright Carl Zuckmayer. The scholarship is aimed at playwrights living in Europe who have already written at least one theatre play that has been staged and/or won an award. The scholarships includes, amongst other things, a grant of 10,000 Euros, support from the dramaturgy department of the Staatstheater Mainz, and the option of the play having its world premiere at the Staatstheater Mainz. The working scholarship is intended to enable the recipient to write a play on a socially relevant, European topic, in the tradition of Zuckmayer, whilst enjoying financial security. A five-member jury decides on the award of the scholarship. The scholarship holder will be announced on 6 May 2027 at the opening of the PLUG&PLAY Festival at the Staatstheater Mainz. The theatre festival PLUG&PLAY, with its focus on young directors, sees itself as a vibrant working forum, a meeting place and an open space for exchange on contemporary theatre. It thus provides the ideal setting for the annual public awarding of the scholarship as well as a reading of the previous year's play within the festival program.
