Throughout the year, we welcome a wide variety of artists in the Mainz Residenz.
Here is an overview on the different projects and artists:
➢ Hannah Frauenrath worked together with ensemble members Carl Grübel and Lennart Klappstein on the project Magic Town in autumn 2023, dealing with the former test town and German Average-Community of Haßloch in the Palatinate region in Germany. This resulted in the full size production Magic Town which premiered on November 23, 2024, at U17. In February of 2024, Hannah Frauenrath worked with Vincent Doddema, Carlotta Hein and Lennart Klappstein on a new project called Hände Hoch.
➢ Bert & Nasi from Marseille did technical rehearsals for their new piece The Beginning in Mainz during their stay at the Residenz in January 2023. . In October and November 2023, the production was shown at U17 and has been successfully touring all over Europe ever since.
➢ Gemma Paintin from Action Hero from Bristol (UK) developed her interactive project Rebel Resistors Radio Club while staying at the Mainz Residenz. During a one-week workshop, she then launched the world's first edition of the club together with 10 children from Mainz, where real radios were built and important messages were out into the world. Gemma then developed this project further and it was featured at the Ruhrfestspiele Recklinghausen and the Midsummer Festival Cork (Ireland).

➢ From November 2022 to April 2024, Andy Field and Beckie Darlington (UK) collaborated with the Arts and Education department JUST and seven school classes from Mainz to developthe Museum der kleinen und übersehenen Dinge (“Museum of small and overlooked things”), which opened its doors for young and old in downtown Mainz for almost three months. This concept has also been well received internationally and was staged in Finland in September 2025. Further project locations are being considered.
➢ In January 2024, the Dutch actor Marcel Hensema worked together with the German playwright David Gieselmann, the assistant director Luis Dekant and costume designer Antonia Hilchenbach from Staatstheater Mainz on an evening about the famous Dutch TV-titan Rudi Carrell. Under the title Showmaster ist mein Beruf, four try-outs were held at the Mainz Residenz in February 2024. The finished play premiered in October 2024 at Kleines Haus. The production is scheduled to go on tour in 2026.
➢ As part of the Creative Europe project Future Laboratory, director Giulia Sangiorgio from Milan spent two intensive weeks of research in Mainz in March 2024. Through interviews with experts and in close contact with, among others, an Italian church community in Mainz, she tried to find answers to how theater could reach new audiences and spark the curiosity of people who had previously had no contact with this medium.
➢ The Iranian author and performer Nassim Soleimanpour stayed at the Mainz Residenz twice in the season 2023/24, where he developed his new play ECHO together with the director Omar Elerian and the dramaturge Immanuel Bartz – a coproduction with Staatstheater Mainz. ECHO premiered in July 2024 at the Royal Court Theatre, London, and has been touring ever since. It will be performed at the Staatstheater Mainz in September 2025.
➢ The play development Ich hab dich, Babe by Vincent Doddema and Hannah Frauenrath was shown at the Residenz.
➢ In November 2023, Frankfurt-based director Kornelius Eich worked on a project with the working title Jó Úszás, in which he collaborated with the well-known Canadian playwright and performer Evelyne de la Chenelière, dancer Lutz Förster, dramaturge and translator Gerda Poschmann-Reichenau, and ensemble members Luise Ehl and Olivia Salm. In Jó Úszás, they engaged with the novel Sterben im Sommer by Zsuzsa Bánk - and a further development of this project will premiere under the title Und im Blau zu verschwinden at Theater Duisburg in March 2026.
➢ Irish playwright Deirdre Kinahan was a guest at the Mainz Residenz in spring 2024, researching for a new play about immigration and history between Rhineland-Palatinate and the Irish region around Limerick. The project called Refuge could be first seen in April in a public sharing in the Mainz Residenz, where ensemble members Hannah von Peinen und Holger Kraft performed together with the Irish company Fishamble. Deirdre Kinahan has finalized her play during the season 24/25. The premiere of the German-Irish co-production will take place at Staatstheater Mainz on June 18 2026, and after that it will travel to Ireland for several performances.
➢ The German playwright Milan Gather wrote the first draft of a new children's theatre play during the season 24/25. The result is Das Lexikon für alles Mögliche (The encyclopedia for anything possible), which premiered as a new production for children aged 7 in September 2025 at Staatstheater Mainz.
➢ Assistant director Luis Dekant worked with ensemble members Lennart Klappstein and Sabah Qalo to edit, adapt and update Heinrich von Kleist's famous work Michael Kohlhaas for contemporary audiences. The result could be experienced in four public Try-Out performances.
